Safe to copy files to computer format?

Please answer my question and did not go off topic to tell me to get an anti-virus. I have a virus and I want to reformat my computer. Fortunately, I have all my drivers and installation files and files saved game in a folder. "I can go back, even in an external hard drive and make it more or is it risky. its best to analyze the specific folder that you want before the backup .. could be infected or perhaps some files contain viruses. better safe than sorry.
